The small town of Tobermory is one of Ontario's most famous summertime areas. The community boasts that it's one of the best fresh water diving areas in the world. Scuba divers love this area because of the large number of shipwrecks they can explore and because it's home to the "Fathom Five National Marine Park." This park offers scuba divers a unique experience not found anywhere else in the world. Summertime visitors are often seen in the area cruising on glass bottom boats that allow them to see the wrecks through the bottom on the boat. Tobermory is also home to some of the best beaches in all of Ontario and combined with the Bruce Peninsula National Park is makes this area a summertime haven for visitors.
If you're a photographer who loves nature, then Tobermory is the place to visit or live. With so many natural settings it's become a paradise for photographers. If hiking is what you enjoy you'll love the miles of untouched forests that are full of cedar and pine trees. It's also an area that is full of native orchids including the ever elusive Calypso Orchid. The Niagara Escarpment lends itself to majestic cliffs where climbers can reach heights of 200 feet on some of the natural outcroppings of rock, while they look down on the aqua green waters of the bay. These are just some of the reasons the Tobermory area was named a UNESCO Biosphere Destination.
Tobermory is an urban village that sits on a small area of land that separates Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. This gives it twin harbours known as the "Big Tub" and "Little Tub." Don't let the urban village designation fool you. Although small, there is much more to the town than most people realize. Tobermory is small enough for tourists yet big enough to hold small conferences. In the summer it becomes a full service vacation area that has something for everyone, no matter what their age.
Residents who live in the quaint area consider themselves lucky. The town has much to offer those who live there full time. The people who love horticulture look forward to the first festival of the year held in June. The Orchard Festival brings in people from all over the world. The festival includes presentations by world renowned speakers, and then heads to the outdoors for guided field activities.
If you buy a home or buy a cottage in Tobermory you'll experience the small town living that so many crave. Retirees are also flocking to the area to escape the big cities and enjoy the peace and quiet of a small Ontario town. The area is known to have the darkest sky in all of Southern Ontario, which makes for some amazing star gazing rarely seen anywhere else in the province.
Because the town is small, everyone knows their neighbor and there is a true sense of community. There are many organizations in the area where one can participate in town activities and many unique small stores that cater to the summer crowds. As an artist colony, especially in the summer, there are amazing works and galleries to visit. Tobermory is truly one of the most special places to live in Canada.
